More Than Behavior Management: Navigating Difficult Patients, Parents, and Pediatric Dental Visits

Location: Online

Pediatric dentistry can be unpredictable. The child who refuses to open, the anxious parent questioning every decision, the strong-willed patient who suddenly changes the entire plan, or the appointment that seems to unravel despite everyone’s best intentions.

Successfully navigating these encounters takes more than knowing traditional behavior guidance techniques. It requires understanding what may be driving the behavior, communicating effectively with both children and parents, setting appropriate expectations, and knowing when success means changing the plan rather than simply completing treatment.

Through real-world scenarios, practical communication strategies, behavior guidance techniques, and lessons learned from more than two decades in pediatric practice, Dr. Reza Ardalan will explore how dental professionals can approach challenging pediatric encounters with greater confidence and flexibility. Participants will learn strategies to reduce conflict, build trust, improve cooperation, and create better experiences for patients, parents, and the dental team.
Because sometimes the best outcome is not simply getting through the appointment – it is preserving the relationship that allows you to successfully care for that child in the future.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Recognize common factors that contribute to challenging behavior in pediatric dental patients and adapt behavior guidance strategies to the individual child.
2. Use communication techniques that build trust, establish expectations, and reduce conflict with parents and caregivers.
3. Evaluate challenging clinical encounters and determine when to continue treatment, modify the approach, postpone care, or consider an alternative treatment strategy.
