Randy Hernandez
Dr. Hernandez received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy and Manual Therapy Certification (MTC) from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in 2001. He received his Fellowship in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy in 2008. He specializes in manual therapy with an emphasis on evaluation and treatment of TMD. For years he has been involved with LSU’s dental and physical therapy programs in the education for the evaluation and treatment of TMD with an interdisciplinary approach to patient care. He has served as the clinical director of The Movement Science Center Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine for 20 years.

Part 2 | Interdisciplinary Approach to the Treatment of TMD: Physical Therapy and DDS Collaboration in Patient Care

This course discusses the collaboration of physical therapists and dental practitioners in the evaluation and management of TMD. An overview of anatomy and biomechanics of the TMJ will be discussed leading into evaluation techniques that will guide treatment. Review of Diagnostic Criteria for TMD will guide evaluation and treatment for appropriate patient population. Demonstration of in-office techniques that can be performed by dental practitioners will help identify TMD patients who are appropriate for physical therapy intervention. Case reviews exploring interdisciplinary treatment for TMD will highlight the efficacy of physical therapy and dental collaboration for this patient population.

Objectives:
1. Review basic TMJ anatomy and biomechanics
2. Discuss typical TMD movement patterns and involved musculoskeletal structures
3. Explain postural effects on the TMJ and corrective physical therapy treatments
4. Review Diagnostic Criteria for TMD to establish sub groups of TMD patients
5. Demonstrate basic tests for dentists to identify TMD patients likely to benefit from physical therapy intervention
6. Discuss interdisciplinary collaboration for the treatment of TMD
7. Case studies review to demonstrate practical application and outcome of treatment collaboration
