Clean Air, Safe Care: Essentials of Dental Air Quality and Nitrous Control

Location: Online

This course introduces dental healthcare providers to the fundamentals of operatory air quality, with a focused emphasis on both nitrous oxide safety and evacuation line maintenance. Participants will explore how nitrous oxide delivery and scavenging systems, together with properly functioning evacuation lines, work in tandem to reduce occupational exposure and improve air quality. The course highlights the importance of routine maintenance, system performance checks, and best practices to ensure effective aerosol capture and safe nitrous administration. Practical strategies are provided to help dental teams minimize airborne contaminants, protect staff health, and maintain a safer clinical environment.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Identify key components of nitrous oxide delivery and scavenging systems as well as dental evacuation systems that impact operatory air quality and exposure risk.
2. Describe mechanisms by which nitrous oxide leakage and improperly maintained evacuation systems contribute to aerosol dispersion and occupational exposure, referencing NIOSH-recommended exposure limits.
3. Demonstrate proper inspection, use, and routine maintenance procedures for nitrous oxide scavenging equipment and evacuation systems to support effective aerosol and gas capture.
4. Differentiate between compliant and non-compliant practices in nitrous oxide administration and evacuation system performance based on OSHA/NIOSH guidance.
5. Evaluate operatory environments and workflows to identify risks for aerosol generation and nitrous oxide exposure and determine appropriate corrective actions
